Five major indicators of vacuum pump oil are indispensable! ‌

Why is vacuum pump oil so picky?
Today, let's talk about something hardcore: the five key performance indicators of vacuum pump oil. Although it is just a "supporting role" in the pump, choosing the wrong oil can lead to unstable vacuum at best and even equipment scrapping at worst! Many customers have reported that they "throw tantrums after changing the oil pump", but in fact, the problem often lies in the oil. The following five major indicators.

(1) Sealing and Viscosity: "Fast" at low temperatures and "stable" at high temperatures
Sealing property is the "basic skill" of vacuum pump oil, while viscosity is its "unique secret recipe". In low-temperature environments (such as winter in the north), the oil must flow as fast as water to enable the pump to start instantly without getting stuck. At high temperatures (such as in a continuously operating workshop), it has to be like glue, "sticking together", forming an oil film to block the gaps where gas leaks.
But just looking at the viscosity is not enough! Some oils become "slimmer" over time - the evaporation of light components causes "oil return", and the vacuum pressure directly collapses. So ‌ low volatility ‌ is the hidden key point. Mineral oil is inferior to synthetic oil in this regard, as the latter is more resilient at high temperatures.
Practical advice ‌ : choose ISO VG 32 in the north and VG 68 in the high-temperature workshop; Synthetic oil has a lifespan that is over 30% longer, but it is twice as expensive. Do the math yourself!
(2) Saturated vapor pressure: The "ceiling" of vacuum Degree
This indicator determines how much "empty" your pump can draw. Simply put, oil will also "fart" (volatilize) at high temperatures. If the saturated vapor pressure is higher than the ultimate pressure of the pump (for example, if the oil is 10⁻²Pa and the pump requires 10⁻³Pa), it is equivalent to leaking air while pumping, and the vacuum degree will never reach.
Industry failure case ‌ : a certain factory used inferior oil, and the vacuum coating machine couldn't reach -0.095mpa no matter how hard it tried. After changing the oil, it immediately met the standard - saving 200,000 yuan in equipment maintenance costs!
Oil selection mnemonic ‌ : Check the technical parameter table of the oil. The saturated vapor pressure at the working temperature must be one order of magnitude lower than the nominal value of the pump!
(3) Ultimate pressure: Oil with many impurities is "poison"
The difference between the ultimate total pressure (oil + air) and the ultimate partial pressure (air only) directly reveals the "purity" of the oil. Large difference? It indicates that the oil is full of volatile impurities. These "troublemakers" will corrode the pump cavity and clog the filter screen, requiring a major overhaul every three months.
Laboratory comparison ‌ : the difference of high-quality synthetic oil is less than 5%, and that of low-quality mineral oil is more than 15%. Long-term use of the latter will halp the pump life!
(4) Lubrication + Cooling: One oil for two uses, a money-saving expert
Lubrication is not just about preventing wear - if the oil film is stable enough and the frictional resistance is low, electricity costs can be saved by 5% to 10%! However, many people overlook the heat dissipation function: the frictional heat inside the pump is carried away by the oil circulation. Oil with poor heat dissipation can cause the bearing temperature to soar above 90℃, and the rubber sealing ring will directly age and crack.
User's actual test ‌ : A certain electronics factory used high heat dissipation ester oil. The pump body temperature dropped from 85℃ to 62℃, and the frequency of replacing the sealing ring was extended from half a year to two years.
(5) Long-lasting three-piece set: Purifying, antioxidant, and anti-emulsifying
Cleanliness ‌ : Just like "dishwashing liquid", it can remove metal debris at any time. Otherwise, the oil sludge will clog the bearing. The machine will be shut down for 8 hours after one disassembly and cleaning! Antioxidant ‌ : synthetic oil can withstand for 2000 hours at 120℃, while mineral oil deteriorates and turns sour after 500 hours, with a taste like rotten eggs. Anti-emulsification ‌ : high humidity in the workshop? When water mixes into the oil and emulsifies, it turns into "milk", and the lubricating effect drops to zero! Good oil can separate from water within two hours.
A Guide to Choosing Oil and Avoiding Pitfalls
Next time you purchase vacuum pump oil, don't just ask about the price! Pass these five major indicators on to the suppliers
Does the viscosity match the operating temperature? Is the saturated vapor pressure low enough? Is the ultimate pressure difference less than 10%? Lubrication coefficient and heat dissipation rate data? Are there any third-party antioxidant reports?
