Classification of grease

2025 05/12

By application classification: Grease can be divided into two types according to its application: general-purpose grease for equipment and special-purpose grease for equipment. The former is used for general mechanical parts, while the latter is used for specific mechanical equipment, such as tractors, railway locomotives, Marine machinery, oil drilling machinery, valves, etc.

Classification by thickener: This is one of the most common classification methods. For instance, calcium-based grease, lithium-based grease, composite aluminum-based grease, composite calcium sulfonate grease, silicone grease, fluorine grease, etc. Each thickener has its unique performance characteristics and is suitable for different working conditions.

Classification by operating conditions: This is a relatively modern classification method, which classifies the grease based on factors such as operating temperature, load, and water pollution. For instance, the operating temperature range of general-purpose lithium-based grease is from -20 to 120℃, and it has excellent water resistance and rust prevention properties.

Classification by color: In some special circumstances, the color of grease is also an important classification basis. For instance, white food-grade grease and transparent food-grade grease are classified based on their colors.

The above are the main classification methods of grease. It should be noted that the same thickener can produce various greases with different properties, and greases produced by different types of thickeners may also have similar properties. Therefore, when choosing grease, in addition to considering the type of thickener, it is also necessary to comprehensively take into account its specific usage conditions and technical requirements.
